The Theory Test has to be passed before a practical test can be applied for. The cost of the test can be obtained and booked on the DSA site, and can be taken at Middlesbrough. A photo driving licence or a old style licence supported by a passport are required to take the test. The theory test is computerized using a touch screen monitor, and the results are given to you before you leave.
The test is in two parts, the first test consists of 50 questions with multiple choice answers and you must get 43 correct answers in order to pass. There are various options for which the pupil may study for the test.

The second part of the test is the hazard perception test. This test consists of 14 video clips, 13 of the clips contain one developing hazard and one clip contains two. You get a maxim score of 5 points for each hazard and must get a score of 44 to pass the test. You must pass both parts to obtain a certificate.
